Well, I think size is based on the artist.
I usually go with these sizes for the art them size them down with lj for the post with a link to the larger size.
Banners - 800x360 or 800x400
Wallpapers - 1920x1200 (widescreen)| 1600x1200 (fullscreen)| 1024x768 (Standard)| 800x600 (Old Standard)
Icons - 100x100
Soundtrack Art - 500x500
Those are just my numbers but I can tell you that 600 is a good width for banners! :D
