Finally: some sightseeing [travelblog]
Aug. 2nd, 2006 02:37 pmSlept a lot better than yesterday, I'm still a little snotfaced, but that's probably because the schoolbuilding is so fricking chilly. The outside temperature is about 22 degrees Celsius, kind of like springtime.
Classes are definitely working, my Spanish is improving every minute, but Maribel has a tendency to give Johan more time to talk, because his Spanish is better. I think it would be better if I get a little more attention *pouts*. Fortunately Omayra lets me practice conversation a lot.
At lunch I try to explain to Rosa that I don't like corn. In Ecuador they call corn on the cob 'choclat', how deceiving is that? To my relieve she is not offended, she even compliments me on my progress in speaking Spanish! It feels good to be able to express myself :-)
In the afternoon I get on the bus to the old part of Quito and walk through the small streets to take a look at all the sights (mostly churches and squares with statues: see pictures). I buy a snack at an Ecuadorian fastfoodshop: three small freshly baked buns and a very cold milkshake (with yoghurt). Tasty!
Even though the interior of the Merced-church is impressive, I'm not very enthoused about the rest of 'viejo' Quito. There is a lot of traffic and it's not very pleasant to walk around the narrow streets: it stinks and it's noisy. I don't experience it as 'a step back into colonial times' at all. But hey, been there, done that *g* Didn't buy the t-shirt, but did see every building on the tourist-list. Sorry, I guess I'm a bit travelled-out, don't mean to put the town down.
At night I do my homework (pfff) and have another long talk at the kitchentable with Helena and Joff. Went to bed about 10 p.m.
Next day: More school plus writing postcards in the park
Pictures week 1
