Before I travel towards the final destination of my roundtrip through Japan, I decide to spend a leisurely morning in Hiroshima. I've discovered an old garden nearby my hotel that I want to explore. It's lovely not to have to get up super early to catch a train:) Of course there will be some traveling in the afternoon when I have to make my way to Osaka, from where I'll be flying home the next day. But first let's go on a lovely stroll!

My original itinerary would have me in a mountain monastery on this day, but because of the typhoon that hit Japan, I had to adjust my trip and I opted to skip the spiritual experience and spend my day exploring history in Hiroshima instead. I got up extra early in my hotel in Kyoto to catch an early Shinkansen (bullet train) and make the most of my time. I was prepared for it to be rough, but the confrontation with the effects of the 1945 A-bomb hit me even harder than expected. I was fortunate to have enough time to decompress afterwards with a trip to beautiful nearby island Miyajima. I'm not sharing any horrid images, but I do talk about the monuments; if you prefer to avoid any references to misery you can scroll down to the Miyajima cut with the gorgeous scenery at the end of the day.

Due to a glitch the automatic crosspost didn't go through and I removed the post linked below;)

In my previous travel report about my traintrip through Japan, I told you there was a typhoon heading for Japan, and as a precaution all shinkansen (intercity bullettrains) were suspended. This forced me to spend an extra day in Kyoto, where I would be safe. I really didn't mind travel coming to a halt for a bit, as I had become weary from having to move about so fast. I was even rather happy because it gave me time to leisurely explore a part of Kyoto that I had been sad about missing out. I also didn't mind the rain and drop in temperature that the typhoon caused in this part of the country, as I quite like windy weather and I had brought my sturdy waterproof Dutch "summer" jacket:)

Let's go!

Hey, remember my holiday to Japan last October and how I never finished my picspams? I plan to finally post the travelreports of the second half of that awesome trip in the next few days (weeks?)

Day 6: A day in Nara )

This was supposed to be a quick post, but it took me a couple of days to put together, as it gets harder to remember details, and I need more and more time to check what's on the photos. So many great memories of this trip:)

Left Tokyo and got on the Shinkansen (bullettrain) to Kyoto. When I got my seat reservation, the lady behind the counter told me she made sure I was sat on the right side of the train for a good view and she was right!

Day 5: From Tokyo to Kyoto. Saw Mount Fuji from the train! )

First actual traintrip of my vacation in Japan! I took the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Utsunomiya and there I caught the local train to Nikko, a sacred sanctuary from the Edo period (1600-1868).

It's been a while since my last travelpost; I hadn't anticipated how much energy moderating the [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang would take. I didn't have any room left to post or do much else on social media except promote that awesome challenge. But now that the event is over and the masterposts are up, I'll finally catch up with my picspams of Japan; let's see how many I can do before the end of the year;)

The third day of my trip to Japan was the first full day in the country and I spent it walking around more than I should have, completely misinterpreting distances on the map, based on my own tiny little country where you can easily explore a town in a day *grins* You'd think I would know better by now, after all the traveling I've done (and also my job involving maps, ahem). I honestly thought I could do it all by foot instead of taking advantage of the brilliant subway system.
Oh well, I got to see almost all the things I wanted, even if my feet hated me. Lesson learned: I did not need to see all the temples; if I had known which one(s) to focus on, I would have had more time to dive into modern day culture. Now I suffered a little temple fatigue at the end of the day. But I did have a great time! And you can check out all the awesome sights below from the comfort of your home:)

Finally got around to start sorting my photos from my trip to Japan. Here's a selection of the first two days of my 10 day tip. Not even a whole day in Tokyo yet, and I already made a ton of photos, heh. Saved me from having to write everything down;) Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
