Well, hello! Checking in with a picspam, because I've been on another amazing businesstrip! I went to Abu Dhabi for work and was fortunate enough to start with a weekend to explore this capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Here's day 1: I took the local bus into town, quickly figured out the place isn't made for walking outside, so I got on a Hop On/Hop Off bustour to see ALL the things :-)

Went on a worktrip to England for two weeks(!) in January, I visited London and Windsor on the weekend in between. I already posted a short impression on my Instagram, below is a picspam of all the food in between and after work plus a full report on all the sights on the weekend. The first week was mostly me an my UK colleagues preparing for the second week when delegations from all over world came over to nerd/work together;-)

I traveled by Eurostar train which still required a transfer in Brussels, Belgium on the way to London (due to renovation of the customs building in Amsterdam), but is going directly from England to the Netherlands on the way back. From my hometown the best connection is through Rotterdam.

It's been a busy month; after the two week renovation of my toilet and shower, I went on another international worktrip. I flew to Bucharest, Romania for a one week conference (where I presented three proposals and three briefs!). Beforehand I had one day to explore the old town and in the middle of the week we got a tour of the Parliamental Palace where we had our meeting. Other than those sight-seeing photos, there is a lot of food in this picspam, enjoy! ;-)

Last week(end) I traveled on the Eurostar to England for another businesstrip. I had a day of rest before work, and I decided to visit a part of London that had been on my to-see list for a while: Greenwich Park, the site of the Royal Observatory – the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the Prime Meridian of the world. The trip there and back was even more fun that I had expected; it was such a relaxing, lovely area and I got to go on a fast boat over the river Thames!

Here's a picspam of my adventure :-)

London in August is very green! )
I took so many pictures (There are 10 more photos on my Instagram!) but I also spent a lot of time walking around without making photos. The Royal Observatory is an interactive museum with loads of information on all things related to time and finding our place in the world. I highly recommend a visit!

Hey hello y'all, I haven't done a proper post in a while (even though I did keep my Booklist up to date;-)
I've been working a lot and traveling* for work in the past few months as well, which I shared at my Instagram instead of here. But even though I get more feedback there, it's not as satisfying as making a full on picspam post, so I'm back here with a new travel report of my personal summervacation trip to Terschelling, one of the islands in the North of the Netherlands.

Now, without further ado, here's an old fashion picspam with loads of babbling about my most recent travels: Four days on Terschelling!

DAY 2: A bit of Cycling )

DAY 3: A horse-drawn wagon )

DAY 4: A museum visit )

I had an excellent time \o/ The end.

My next work-trip will be in about two weeks, to England again and I'm currently working towards the big biannual international conference in September), destination to be revealed later; (What is my life?!)

In between work and travels I also participated in another Phase of Land of Art, I will share graphics in the near future (promise;)

Two weeks ago I went on another international businesstrip; this time I had a week of day long meetings in Strasbourg, France! I had one day to wander around town and for group activity we went on a boattrip:) There were two days when the meetings lasted until 7 p.m., but on the final day I did have some time to check out the inside of the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Besides work and those sightseeing moments, we spent quite some time eating; for each lunch our host had picked a different restaurant and another local dish to experience. So much food! Sadly the meeting chair denied our request for naps before continuing our meetings in the afternoons;-) Nevertheless, it was a very succesful week. Enjoy the picspam.

Last week I had my offical summerholiday and I spent three wonderful days at Vlieland, the smallest of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea up North. (I put up some pics at my Instagram). Of course the reason I had only a few vacationdays left is because I spent them all in New Zealand and Australia after the conference in Auckland back in April;)
Here is the penultimate picspam of that big trip: some more time in Newcastle with my brother, sister in law and nephew, AND I went on a daytrip to Melbourne for a fangirl meet-up with [personal profile] majestic_duxk!

This month I've been busy with moderator duties for the good old NicknGreg fandom; I had to sort out a few issues on the WMTDB website in order to get it ready for the definite transition to AO3. It was such a relief when I finally traced some mystery tags back to a fic challenge from 2004! Hopefully that was the final problem and we'll have a smooth move from here on:)

Today I dove back into my pile of photos from my (business) trip to New Zealand; these picspams are of the last two days before I flew on to Australia for a family visit.
Because of my covid isolation I had lost some days that I had wanted to use for exploring around Auckland before I had to catch the train to Wellington. Thankfully I still had one day left to visit a sight on top of my list: Maungawhau (Mount Eden). The climb took a lot less time than expected, so I also had a few hours to finish the day on one of my favorite mode of transportation: a ferry!

Look at my happy face (That's Auckland in the background:)

Let's goooo!

... but then the bus turned out to be cancelled, as was the next one (an hour later) and all the busses after that, so at the end of the evening I had no choice but to walk all the way to the hotel in the Parnell neighbourhood, which took me about an hour *sighs*.
Oh well, I did have a wonderful day and tomorrow I get to sit down all day on the train :-p

Thursday, April 6: Train from Auckland to Wellington )

Will be continued with my trip to Australia!

I would have been squeeing ahead of time, but I don't really want to advertise when I'm leaving my home;) At the end of January I went on another international businesstrip! I had a weeklong working-session in Paris, where I spent all days in a meeting-room having heated discussions with other geodata nerds \o/ It was brilliant:) We did get out of the room for lush lunches (the amount and quality comparible to my cruise trip!) but most hours of the day it was workworkwork.
In the evenings I had additional meetings, so there wasn't any time to explore the town. Luckily I got to see the Eiffeltower in the distance when I crossed the Seine on my walk to the meeting, which is how I at least knew I was in Paris, haha!

IMG_6627_Paris_JAN2023.jpg

Fortunately, when I planned the trip I had thought we might need time on Saturday for additional meetings and I had booked the last train of the day to go home. After we managed to get our whole agenda done with the evening sessions, I had the whole Saturday to wander through Paris!

There are a few photos that summarize my workweek on my Instagram, but here's my full Paris experience!

Trains, metros, walking and cycling in Paris! )

DAY 7: A stroll (and a boatride) through Paris! )

Without giving away too much, I can say there will be more worktrips this year;) Keep watching this space if you want to travel along!

Been back to work for a week already since my vacation and as always I'm surprised how fast the routine sinks in again and I forgot all the good intentions about reordering my daily life after traveling, haha. Oh well, I'm a human of habits I guess. Here's the second part of my short trip to the island Ameland, these are the final two days in which I do more cycling and reading (in a bath with bubbles of course) plus a walking excursion through the dunes. Come explore some more with me!

Day 3: Cycling to the Lighthouse )

Day 4: Back on the boat )

If you are a fan of nature, Ameland is definitely worth a visit. I understand summer can be quite crowded there, but it looks like it's a pretty awesome destination year round!

Yesterday I came home from a lovely four day trip to one of the Wadden Islands up in the North of the Netherlands: Ameland. It's an hour by train and half an hour by bus plus another 50 minutes by ferry, so just enough travel to make if feel like a true vacation:-) I had booked a fancy suite in a 'boutique' hotel with 2 (two!) rain showers and a free-standing bath tub. I had brought a whole bunch of books to read and hadn't really planned to be very active. Beforehand I had checked if I could hire a regular bicycle, but found they only had bikes with gears or e-bikes available and neither suits me. But upon arrival at the hotel I discovered there was a rental bikeshop just around the corner so I decided to ask in person and they had a perfect bike available after all. I love cycling lots and it's so much easier to move around than walking and I couldn't resist exploring the island beyond the tiny village I stayed in. Want to come along? Here's a picspam of my first two days...

Day 1: Travel to Nes )

Day 2: Cycling to 't Oerd )

Size facts about Ameland: the island is 25km long and varies in width from 4km in the West to only 2km in the East. There live about 3700 people permanently and all year round there are about 40,000 visitors (25,000 from Germany)!

Well, it's been a *month*, pfff. At the end of March, just before I was going to travel for work, I overextended my already painful shoulder to the edge and had to see a physical therapist who told me what I already knew for some time: that I needed to take a break, haha. No time for that yet, because I had an international geodata conference in the Czech Republic to go to! So I put my arm in a sling to avoid more damage to that shoulder and got on planes and trains to go to Mikulov, a small town just over the border from Austria.

When I got back home, I finally managed to slow down a bit. I'm on partial sickleave and only work half days to allow my shoulder (and me) some rest and time to go to physical therapy. I have to avoid computer work as much as possible, that also includes playing with photos, journals and blogs, hrmpf. So I had to limit typing about the sights and took a lot of breaks, but eventually I put together this picspam of the first part of my trip :-p

So I was supposed to go on this theatre trip to London in July 2020, but then the world got to go into lockdown and the play was cancelled. I was thrilled when I got a mail from the Young Vic theatre earlier this year announcing that they would put on Hamlet with Cush Jumbo after all and that my ticket would be valid for the new dates. I was very excited when I got the confirmation for Saturday October 17, a perfect day for me to organize traveling to London. Since the world still hadn't recovered fully, I planned for minimum travel: take the nightferry on Friday, spend Saturday in London and then one night in a hotel before catching the Eurostar train back to the Netherlands. Exactly the amount of traveling needed to see the play as comfortable as possible within the limitations.

I wouldn't have traveled at all if it wasn't for this rescheduled play, as the world was still not perfectly safe from Covid, but traveling was allowed with strict rules and I stuck to them all; wearing a face mask on the ferry and trains, getting tested within 2 days of arrival to the UK (even though I would leave again the next day, this test was still mandatory) and getting tested again to go back home. (Even though I am vaccinated, for traveling back into my country an additional negative test was needed). I was willing to do it all, just to see Cush Jumbo on stage.

I have taken the night ferry loads of times and love it lots, but for some reason this time it was too crowded and several things went wrong. The connecting train from Harwich was replaced with a temporary bus service, but that had also happened before, so I could deal. London Underground was hellish, with about half of the people not wearing a face mask (and in my opinion abusing the option for exemption) and for my afternoon tea I had to deal with a stuck up server, but I kept my eye on the price: a nice evening in the theatre... (I did have some fun in between all the hassle; I found a souvenir my mom had requested, I got to go shopping at Boots and Marks & Spencers plus I got fancy at Fortnum & Mason, so not everything was bad, but I did feel slightly off kilter all day)

And then, it was finally time to go to the theatre, yay! I was all giddy walking from Waterloo Station to the Young Vic, discovering Cush Jumbo's photo high up there. I took a picture with her in the background before going to enter the theatre, where I walked into a pamflet on the door stating that 'due to unforeseen circumstances, the evening performance was cancelled'! I was in shock but to be honest not that surprised, because of all the little things that went wrong, so of course this was the final thing that had to happen. I still went inside and found out the theatre had sent out an email in the afternoon, but I was glad I had missed that or I would have been moping all day and now I had at least had a somewhat pleasant day in London.
The staff was very nice and they were sad a rebooking was not an option for me. They did arrange an e-ticket for the online live performance at the end of the month and I got a program, which I loved.

I got on the Tube back to Leicester Square and walked through the theatre district to see if I could maybe get a ticket to another play, but I wasn't really in the mood for what was potentially available, so in the end I bought myself some comfort doughnuts and returned to my hotel where I relaxed in a bubbly bath with a book.

Of course I still did come home with a whole bunch of photos from that one day in London. See if you can discover all the signs that this just wasn't my lucky weekend;)

A sunset, a sunrise and squirrels! )

So two weeks later I got to watch the play from home, on my computer. It was still great to see Cush Jumbo, but even though it was live and I got close ups, on screen is not really as intense as in the theatre, is it? I hope I get another chance to see her on stage in the future. (Now that she's living in the UK again, that could happen, right?) - good review of Hamlet by Nick here

Right after I got back home from visiting ArtZuid in Amsterdam back in September, I did a quick Instragram post with ten pics, meant to be an appetizer for a long picspam follow up on LiveJournal & DreamWidth a couple days later. But then work took over my life for a bit and the final preparations for the SPN_ReverseBang ate up a lot of time too and then I went to London and then I went to Amsterdam for another exhibition and this is the first weekend in a long time where I had nothing planned, so I'm finally getting around to a sorting out my photos!

ArtZuid is an outdoor art exhibition in the South of Amsterdam that's organized every two years, with pieces from sculptors all around the world. For this year's edition I got on a train with my mom and we hired public transport bicycles at the Amsterdam South station from where brotherdearest H. guided us around. I think we only missed 4 or 5 sculptures from the total of about 90! I didn't get good photos of all of them, and some of them had to be captured from more angles; this picspam contains 87 photos in total;) Enjoy!

Let's get on our bicycles and go! )

I thought for sure I had shared photos of previous years ArtZuid, but the only one I could find was from 2013!

Ahw, my final day in Haarlem, so I'm saying goodbye to the fancy Royal Suite *happy sigh*. For my last bit of vacation away from home, I'm meeting up with brotherdearest H. He often cycles from Amsterdam through Haarlem to get to the beach and he was happy to show me a couple of sights that I had missed on my first visit.
The past few days were rainy, but we were lucky to have dry weather, so we could stick to our plan of cycling to the beach together!

Yay, I finally had time to take a longer break from work and I took a week off for a bit of a vacation. I arranged a short get-away to the same hotel in Haarlem that I had discovered in July. This time I treated myself to two nights (2!) in the Royal Suite which had a bathtub that promised a full immersion instead of the bottomsoaker experience I had in that design hammock bath last time;)
On my first day in Haarlem I also met up with [livejournal.com profile] sillie82 for some socially distanced fangirling. While we caught up on life and fandom, we explored the St. Bavo church (where we discovered Pillar Biters!:)

Had a wonderful night in my hotel in Haarlem; the bedroom is next to a quiet garden and I slept very well. Because of Corona measures, breakfast is in timeslots and I'm assigned 10-11 a.m, which is fine with me. I want to make the most of my time in this fancy Presidential Suite, so I'm in no rush to leave my room and thus start my day with another soak in the hammock bath, haha! Beware of my smug bubblebath pose below;)

Although I already did a bunch of sightseeing yesterday, there is still a lot of exploring left to do. So, let's have a hearty breakfast and go!

After weeks of training new people at the office, I was very happy to finally be able to take a couple of days off. I spent the first two days reading on the couch with lushious breakfast and lunch in between, it was bliss. For a true summervacation feel, I wanted a bit of time away from home as well, within the limitations of social distancing, of course.
Since intense traveling wasn't possible, I figured I'd make the most of a nearby destination with just enough traintravel to make it feel like a journey but still be comfortable in these pandemic times. I was thrilled when I found a hotelroom with a bath in a town I hadn't visited before. It wasn't just any room: I arranged the PRESIDENTIAL SUITE for a night in a very fancy hotel in Haarlem. And this suite didn't have a regular tub, but a ... hammock bath. I couldn't wait to find out what that was like!
Before I check in though, let's do a little exploring!
