Last week I had my offical summerholiday and I spent three wonderful days at Vlieland, the smallest of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea up North. (I put up some pics at my Instagram). Of course the reason I had only a few vacationdays left is because I spent them all in New Zealand and Australia after the conference in Auckland back in April;)
Here is the penultimate picspam of that big trip: some more time in Newcastle with my brother, sister in law and nephew, AND I went on a daytrip to Melbourne for a fangirl meet-up with

Monday, April 10: Bogey Hole in Newcastle, Train to Sydney (for nightbus to Melbourne!)

Getting ready for fangirl-meet up in Melbourne with my hunter shirt; I will be taking the nightbus tonight! This morning my brother J, sister in law G. and nephew R. take me to another Newcastle beach. From here you can see Nobbys Head Lighthouse!

I have two scoops of icecream: licorice flavour on top and underneath that a rainbow bubblegum combo:) Then we walk to The Bogey Hole to check out the waves crashing on the rocks!
The Bogey Hole is a heritage-listed sea bath in Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. In about 1820 Lieutenant-Colonel Morisset, the Commandant of Newcastle, ordered the construction of the pool for personal use. It was known originally as the "Commandant's Baths". The name "Bogey Hole" was applied afterwards and is said to come from the Dharawal word meaning "to bathe". In 1863, control of the bath passed to Newcastle Borough Council for public use.

After that my family drops me off at the Newcastle trainstation where I catch the afternoon train to Sydney.

Such glorious views from the train on the about three hour long journey *chinhands*. Upon arrival at Sydney Central I walk around the station in search of the busstop and a bite to eat.

I have a doner kebab with beef, lettuce, tabouli, cheese and garlic sauce before I get on the nightbus (fortunately I brought Tic-Tacs;) which departs at 19:00 (7 p.m.). I manage to get a bit of sleep along the way.
Tuesday, April 11: fangirl-hang out in Melbourne

I arrive at Southern Cross station in Melbourne a little after 6 a.m.; I buy a myki public transport card and head to a regional train. The name of this café makes me laugh:)

Glorious sunset from the train and at Flemington Bridge station *hearteyes*

Duxk picked me up and she made me breakfast at her house in between fangirling. Turns out our jobs are related and she had experience with international conferences as well. Such fun to get to know each other in person!
After freshening up we got on a tram to the Melbourne citycenter for a lovely walk through town.

A eclectic set of buildings and a green tram.

We had a little sit down at a lovely macaron/chocolate shop.

Not a manhole cover, but at least proof of meeting up with a fellow fangirl in Australia;)
The sun was hitting St Michael's church beautifully.

We came across a sculpture that had the weirdest angle of the crucifiction I have ever seen o_O
Some pretty details on a buildings facade.

Cool lions on that building's exterior.
The pretty entrance of The Block Arcade where we strolled along some shops.

Look at that floor <3. We spent quite some time in the Dr. Seuss gallery; such happy making artworks:)

From there we walking down Elizabeth Street that has a mix of old and new buildings.

Check out the clocks at Flinders Street Station!
I also love the public transport map of Melbourne; we take the tram to the National Gallery. When we walk from the tramstop to the museum we pass a cool artwork with moving birds, see video below:
Australian Birds, a LED based public artwork by Julian Opie, Located on the western median strip on St Kilda Road, across from The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia.

It's lunchtime, so we first sit down in the National Gallery's Tea Room for a fancy high tea, omnomnom.

Then we check out the history of fashion magazines and the confusing mirror artpiece in the Great Hall.

We walk below the gorgeous stained-glass ceiling of The Great Hall, designed by Melbourne artist Leonard French and go to the outside courtyard to experience the Temple of Boom, an installation by Adam Newman & Kelvin Tsang; it's a flamboyant tribute to the Parthenon, with contributions by different artists.

Between the colourful columns sits Henry Moore’s 1958 bronze sculpture Draped Seated Woman and there is a song playing that perfectly captures the mood of this dreamy temple (Portishead - Glory Box)

Different artists have filled the floor of the Temple of Boom with art, amongst them Aretha Brown, who depicted young Aboriginal people imploring their Elders for guidance.

Found this fascinating sculpture in the back moat of the gallery, couldn't find out who made it :-(
Walking along Kilda Road back towards the city centre, stared up at this pointy tower of the Fairfax Studio (theatre).

Duxk and I find a bench to sit on the Princes Bridge across the Yarra River where we do some more chatting before she brings me to Flinders Street Station to catch a train to Southern Cross station.

I'm not taking the nightbus back, but I get on the SkyBus to Melbourne Airport (MEL)

There is a direct flight to Newcastle; on the plane I get Mediterranean Chicken Croquettes.

It's a tiny airport and I walk from the plane across the tarmac to the terminal where my family picks me up for the short drive back to their appartment.
What a day! It was so great to meet you,
majestic_duxk!
Wednesday, April 12: Pirate Point, Stockton, Newcastle with brother and nephew

Today my brother and nephew take me to yet another corner of Newcastle; we walk towards the port side. My poor feet don't get any rest after all the walking in Melbourne, but I'm happy to see some cool streetart along the way (Union Street/King Street)

Ship to Shore by Matthew Harding; these knots light up in the dark (2014, stainless steel, LED and fibre optics).
Old map of the port area; we will be taking the ferry to Stockton, the big blob in the middle at the top of the map:)

*bounces with excitement for the ferry* I LOVE FERRIES!!

Bye Queens Wharf! Across the Hunter River massive ships come in all day, we have a blast watching from Pirate Point (Burrabihnga) how the tiny pilot boats guide them:)

View of the other side of Nobbys Head Lighthouse (remember from Monday?).
Pretty purple flowers and bottle brush bushes.

We sit down at Lexie's on the Beach for old fashioned milk shakes and blue berry bread, churros bites, nutella and icecream; the BEST lunch :-p

Another massive ship coming in from the South Pacific Ocean.
Bird with the body of a pigeon and hte head of a crow!

A Rainbow Lorrekeet (parrot), so colourful!
An upside down tree, heehee.

We couldn't quite figure out what was going on in the harbour, but it looked spectacular!
While we were waiting for the return ferry I saw a flock of white cockatoos.

Back on the main land more cockatoos up a tree near Foreshore Footpatch and funky sculptures in Hunter Street: Rabbitwoman and Dogman by Sydney artists Gillie and Marc. (Supposedly these figures are their alter egos)

Hunter Street: could have used that bicycle warning sign in France in January! (DW/LJ
These fun figurines were all over Newcastle, I thought this one looked like our former Queen Beatrix, but am not sure who she's supposed to represent.

Tree in Corlette Street; such a green walk back to the appartment. My brother and nephew have long legs so they are usually way ahead of me ;-p.
I put my feet up the rest of the day.
One more picspam to go...
