No school today, woohoo! Now I can let the backpacker inside of me out: I'm taking the bus to Otavalo for a visit to the famous market. On the bus I'm confronted with my inadequate knowledge of Spanish (although I'm sure the guy who sold me the ticket sent me to the wrong bus) it turns out I'm on the bus from another company: it does go to Otavalo, but I have to pay for a new ticket. According to the controler on the bus I will get my money back if I hand in my old ticket. It's only 2 dollars, but he makes such a big deal of it, I decide to do as he tells me the minute we get to Otavalo-busstation. The woman behind the counter calls a guy who walks straight to the controler and tells him he should have accepted my ticket and I get my money back, pfew. (told you I didn't make a mistake:)
The trip from Quito didn't last as long as expected (only two hours), so I'm early enough to visit Otavalo's animal market north of town. It's fun to watch the negotiations between the indigenous people with the pigs and piglets being paraded around:)
But the main attraction of Otavalo is the huge crafts-market, concentrated around 'Poncho Plaza', but stretched out all over town. It's a great place for souvenir-shopping and to my relieve the people who are selling stuff are not pushy: if you just want to walk around or take a look, that's fine too. After some negotiations I buy bolsa's (bags) and gorro's (hats) for everyone at home:)
I also score some big ass strawberries, the biggest I have ever seen. A bit too sweet for my taste, but a lovely lunch: I eat them in the bus on the way back to Quito. I resist temptation to go to an internetcafe and go straight back home (Casa de Rosa) Good girl:)
To -ehm- learn spanish I watch some tv until diner. Rosa left us some left-overs in the fridge. At night Helene and I hang out in the kitchen and watch the spanish dubbed version of 'WindTalkers' a bad movie with Nicolas Cage, perfect to make fun off. And that's exactly what we do *g*.
TMI cupcomment: an okay day.
Next day: climbing a mountain and an afternoon in the mall
