Smoking among teens is rapidly going out of fashion, reports the Volkskrant on the basis of long-term research at the University of Maastricht in Limburg amongst 25 thousand students.
Only 8 percent of second graders in secondary education smokes. In 1996 this was 22 percent.
The reduction applies to all school types (VWO, HAVO and VMBO). There is no difference between boys and girls.
Models of the National Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM) show that the decrease in smoking among students will lead to a decrease in smoking-related diseases in the future. The study will appear in the European Journal of Public Health next week.
