Artwork SPN_J2_BigBang 2019 - the first

There were once again many great fics on offer in this year's
spn_j2_bigbang; this was the first one I managed to claim. I was inspired to try some magical animation. I was happy to learn the author didn't mind not having J2's faces in the storybanner, so I could experiment with the image of the tree I had in my head. This is what happened...

Title: Black Cat Mercantile
Author:

Artist:

Fic Rating: NC17 | Pairing: Jared/Jensen [RPF AU] | Word count: 45,795
Art Rating: G | Medium: Papercutting and Photoshop (animation)
Summary: Searching for materials for a new sculpture he's planning, Jared gets sent to a magical salvage shop in a bad part of town. The proprietor's got a great artistic eye, a criminal conviction, and an attitude that could earn him a punch to the face. Jared finds himself coming back, anyway.
More Artwork!

Besides the red (winter) version I also made a green tree!

Close up of the battered shop sign.

A still of the tree.

A real winter version of the red tree:)

The Making Of

The sketch I made after reading; in the corner a quick doodle of my idea of the sculpture *grins*

Papercolour selection and set up of the tree.

Cutting leaves with my tiny scissors.

Pressing veins in every leaf.

Playing with the pretty colours.

Setting up the camera with my brand new tripod I bought for this project:)

Testing background colours and how to best add leaves (found out doing it by hand was quicker and saver:).

Decided that the tree was too short and that purple was perfect for the sidewalk.
Cutting a new tree and figuring out how tall it should be.

Magic of the door revealed;) I love the paper I found for this, the pattern looks like I imagined the magical ardglass.

I really don't have enough patience for cutting letters, managed to not make mistakes. However, the cat had to be recut.

After finally finishing the sign, I had to beat it up a bit to fit the description in the fic, that was a little nervewracking;)

With all the elements done, it's time to set up the camera for real and start clicking! I take a photo of every leaf that I add (and take away; I do several rounds of each colour, building the tree up and then break it down again, all in one go because of the light)

For the final green tree animation I chose* the version that starts in the middle.

For the final red tree animation I chose* the version that starts on the outside.

*(Well, I say that like I had a choice; in a couple of rounds I photographed leaves would trip others, causing wibbles in the animation, so I actually chose the sessions in which I managed to fill/empty a tree without fuck-ups;)
Creating the End Banner
Did you guess from that first doodle what the sculpture was gonna be? This Making Of is slightly spoilery for the fic.

I'm not that good at drawing in general and horses are notoriously hard to capture, so I used a colouringpage as a base. For the skeleton part I looked at a reference on Wikipedia. I taped a piece of sparkly brown paper underneath for cutting.

Cut the horse out of the same textured brown paper as the tree and fit the ribcage in between.

I was at my mom's when I fiddled with this and really needed another type of brown paper; of course my mom had some crafts material at hand, haha (we are such hoarders of stuff).
Initially I was going into a too neat direction before I remembered I wanted the paper to look like driftwood...

So I stepped out of my comfort zone and just cut messy pieces to create a more dynamic horse:)

Thank you,
deadlybride for this magical story; you created an intense universe and characters I loved to hang out with. It was awesome to imagine Jared's sculptures and Jensen's shop. <3
Of course also big thanks to marvelous mod
wendy and everyone who participates in the
spn_j2_bigbang for continuing this classic fandom event.
