After brotherdearest, my mom, her boyfriend and I finished our Illuminade Walk, I convinced them we also had to do the Boat Route with an additional 20 pieces of light art. *grins* The Theme of the waterpart of the Light Festival is A View On Amsterdam and all the light art is either in, on, or next to the canal called the Herengracht which goes all around the city center. There are a couple of installations in the Oosterdok harbour as well, so the only way to see them all is to take a boat tour. \o/

TEASER:

First piece is Wolfert's Dog by Tatiana Titova, inspired by an 8th century story I had never heard of, about a Norwegian prince who was saved by the dog of a Frysian fisherman after a shipwreck. When they got caught in another storm, the prince pledged to build a city on the first place the dog would lay down. They ended up on the shore of the Amstel with the dog sleeping peacefully under a tree next to them. [Geert Mak - A Brief Life of the City]

View of Central Station from the water and Wolfert's Dog through the window. (Don't worry, I'll open it along the way to take photos; this one turned out so very artsy though!)

In front of the boat you can see Arco by Teresa Mar, on the right we pass the pretty lights of the sailboats in the Oosterdok harbour <3

A peek through the windows at the other side of the boat for Blueprint by Reier Pos: moving laserbeams projecting a step by step of the historical drawing of the National Maritime Museum on the side of the building.
First light art we see when the boat turns onto the canal is letterart Together by Luigi console and Valantina Novembre. Gorgeous!

In the distance, because I didn't manage to take photos up close: Nexus by Vikas Patil and Santosh Gujar.
Hey, recognize the shape of organic Rhizome House from our Illuminade Walk? We saw it in all white then, but when more people started to interact with the installation, the colours came out! A closer look below:

Rhizome House by DP Architects; I just love how the people in front of it create an extra layer on the light art. It's as if their silhouettes are telling a story! <3<3<3

Bunch of Tulips by Peter Koros. *chinhands*

Welcome To My Home(town) by Lighting Desgins Academy, a set of five houses floating over the canal. When the boat approaches them, they look 3D but when you pass them by, you discover the houses are merely two dimensional flat frames, a very cool effect:)

IMG_6962 WaterColors 02012017.jpg IMG_6964 WaterColors 02012017.jpg
Bridge of the Rainbow by Gilbert Moity in honour of the LGBTQ community in Amsterdam has changing colours, just like Flowerstrip by Aether & Hemera. The latter represents the flowerfields in the Netherlands. The waves added something even more magical to these light art designs.

The Lace by Choi + Shine Architects, a suspended lace construction based on the shape of a traditional Dutch cap (bonnet). Woven with a light-reflecting fabric of threads.
Wisp by Pitaya was hard to photograph because it fits its name perfectly; the swirling lights in the trees really resembled a thin, fleeting puff of smoke.

15000 And More by Studio Klus showed a whole bunch of bicycles, reclaimed from the depths of the canal to create an awesome light installation. Yes, there are indeed 15000 bicycles fished out of the canals in Amsterdam EACH YEAR!!
The last photo is dark and grainy, but I really like how my mom caught me on camera here; I had such an awesome day. \o/

The special Water Color boat tours run until January 22nd, check out the official Light Festival website for more information. Also for the next edition:)

I know! It's crazy! I've seen one of the canal cleaning boats at work and it just kept fishing up bicycles with every scoop, it was ridiculous.

All the art was amazing, I'm glad I bought the 'Lightbook' with all the background information, I missed quite a bit of the audiotape because I was too mesmerized by looking at the pretty;)

Oh my, I am overwhelmed with the beauty!

(and seriously, 150000 bicycles in the canal? What the hell?)

Woah, you added a zero, but 15,000 bicycles is still a LOT, right? I honestly don't know why people do that o_O

The Lightfestival is such fun, I was overwhelmed by the creativity and the beauty of the designs <3

Oh, so I did! But yeah, 15,000 bikes is a LOT.
