Oh, I so love fandom of any kind. I spent hours last night reading comments in
devildoll's old post about the Mary Jane-statue - until about 4 a.m. (Thank you
rispacooper for leading the way to that journal - even though you might not even know how I got there;).
I was fascinated by the whole feminist discussion that followed after devildoll posted a sarcastic comment to this picture of the rather sexist (sexy?) statue from the Superman-collection. She said: "I'm so happy for Mary Jane. She isn't just the damsel in distress. She gets to wash Parker's Spidey costume with both her tits *and* her thong showing! - You've come a long way, baby! :-)
It was a message meant for her friends from the 'girls who read comicbooks'-community, but it spread around the webz like wildfire. In no time her journal was overflown by people who thought the statue was demeaning to women and of course those who disagreed followed. What do you think: Hot stuff or Quite Disgusting? (scroll down for the discussion;)
I think it's a really ugly statue -whether it's 'art' or not- and I'm also on the side of the ladies (and gentlemen!) who can't bear to look at it for other reasons. I say it's tasteless and definitely offensive.
In response to certain arguments, I'm linking to the Anti-Comics-Feminist Bingo-card, where you can find answers to good old anti-feminists attacks like "You’re only jealous because you don’t look like that."
I just posted this in my original Dutch blog as well, even though it might inspire a troll from the past to return. He is apparently triggered by feminist issues, so I'm preparing for battle: fun for all! I love the internetz:)
