I'm writing bookreviews today. Well, bookbabbles really, since I can't be too coherent about most of the books I'm reading at the moment. I usually only read one book at the time, but I only had a couple of pages of the appendix of De Oratore by Cicero left, when I couldn't resist starting in Stephen Fry's The Ode Less Travelled. Then I discovered the books had certain expressions in common, so I wanted to write about that, forgot to put them back in my backpack and ended up reading my emergency book (What? Like you leave the house with only one book for the road). That last one is The Xenophobe's Guide To The Dutch which turns out to be a lot more accurate than I expected. Of course the book is much more right about the good stuff than the bad, but I may not be the most average person in the Netherlands, so I fear even the things I don't agree with might be true *g*.

While I'm stating in my original review I bought the book for my classics collection, the truth is a bit different. Back in the early eighties there was a Canadian tv-series Huckleberry Finn and His Friends starring Ian Tracey as Huck Finn. Oh, how I loved that boy, with his awesome hair and his gapped teeth. I either wanted to be him or snuggle him. I never knew the original story was about Tom Sawyer, whom I didn't like at all. But I always remembered him as a friend of Huck, so when I found The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, I just had to buy it, even though I usually don't want translated books if I can read the original. Sadly there isn't much of the Huck I loved in it (no pictures either *pouts*) but while searching for pictures of my Huckleberry, I learned the series is released on DVD, so yay! Unfortunately it's almost as expensive as the Torchwood box, booh! But I think I need to have it. I earned it by finishing the book despite the lack of Huck;)
Ian Tracey's name also stuck to my mind and I've tried to follow his career, but last time I saw him on a regular basis was in reruns of 90s camp detective show Tropical Heat (also known as Sweating Bullets). He had biceps (and triceps!) to drool over and I still wanted to ruffle his hair. I also remember being all giddy when he appeared on the X-files, one of the rare episodes I watched completely. I noticed on IMDb Ian has been in a lot more stuff since then, but most Canadian series aren't shown here, so I lost track. Now if only I knew someone who could keep me posted on him... Anyone going to Canada?

I know Ian Tracey! He was in a great Canadian series called DaVinci's Inquest, which used to run over here at about midnight but I was addicted to it. I sometimes look longingly at the boxsets on Amazon, hoping they'll go on sale but they never seem to.

Feel the Ian!Love !!!!!!!11!1!!1!!!!!!!!

I have been crushing on him for about 20 years now - alas, I never even heard of Huckleberry Finn and friends until about a year ago.

If you can manage to find it - it's difficult - you must, simply MUST MUST MUST watch him in Dreamspeaker. WeeIan was only 11 when he made this (I believe his second thing ever) and he completely knocked my socks off. He was an emotionally disturbed boy in a very difficult but compelling film, that neither would nor could have been made in the US. It's short, only like 75 minutes but I cried through about 30 of them.

After reading this I just read an article about how popular that Huckleberry Finn series is in Germany while very few in North America are even aware of it.

Ian actually starred in his own series called Intelligence this pass fall for the CBC.

I, like you, watch for him in any shows filmed in Canada. He almost always shows up eventually.

Yeah, I came across the German edition DVD while looking for information, strangely enough it is called 'Tom Sawyer's and Huckleberry Finn's Adventures'. Huck never gets the credit he deserves *pouts*

I just wish Canadian television promoted their stuff as strongly as the stations in the US.

*giggles* I will keep an eye out for his stuff while I'm there (yeah, it does sort of sound like I made my mind up, doesn't it? Huh.). And with all the Canadian stuff I watch, I'm surprised I've only seen him in DaVinci's Inquest! Where the hell was his Due South guest spot? All of Canada was in that damn show! ;)

Brad Renfro will always be my Huckleberry Finn *sniffles*.
I know what you mean about Tom Sawyer though, I always preferred Huck in the book, too. It's been ages since I read it... *runs off to read your review*
