Only 34 pages to go!
Jan. 31st, 2009 11:39 pmI've nearly finished Metamagical Themas by Douglas R. Hofstadter (801 pages, excluding the bibliography and acknowledgments;). Reading this book has made me so happy. (I posted a couple of reviews of earlier chapters, I especially recommend this part on default sexism.)
This week I came across an awesome quote in the Selection & Stability chapter called "The Prisoner's Dilemma and the Evolution of Cooperation". The quote is not by Hofstadter himself, but by Ashleigh Brilliant, whose own books seem mighty interesting as well.
Should I abide by the rules until they're changed,
or help speed the change by breaking them?
As with most of the wonderful words in the book I have too many thoughts to coherently explain why I'm so touched by this. (I can't even quote lines from Hofstadter himself;)
