Bwaaaah: WTF? I had a terrible night with hardly any sleep and I wake up feeling hot (and not in a good way). I get to breakfast in my pajama and feel horrible.
Helene thinks I got a slight case of altitude sickness. The combination of traveling all weekend, the intense lessons yesterday and climbing instead of walking down the street (not used to mountains in the Netherlands;) has got to me and the different air at this altitude is making it hard to breath. My body is protesting. I feel weak but manage to get dressed on time for school. I'm not giving up: teach me Spanish!
Today I start my regular schedule: first two hours conversation in a groupclass with profesora Maribel and Johan from Danmark. After that it's supposed to be grammar from profesora Omayra, but she understands I mostly need to be able to speak Spanish for traveling, so we decide to spend more time on conversation than learning past tense and all that;) I love my teacher.
After lunch I decide to have a long siesta, my body likes me and I'm starting to feel normal again.
In the evening Joff invites me to go with him to meet some of the other volunteers. We spent the evening playing cardgames with Lisa and Jessica from Canada (like Joff they pronounce 'about' like 'aboot', it's adorable;) and Mike from the USA. We have a great time and it's very relaxing not to have to speak Spanish for a change.
PLUS: this bunch of youngsters suprises me: not a smoker among them: kids today hey? Gotta love them. The Lonely Planet mentioned that in Ecuador everybody smokes everywhere, but so far I've had a much more positive experience. I think in the 'Western World' the ratio smokers is about 1 on 3 and if I'd have to guess I'd say in Quito it's about 1 on 50 people. I'm having a great time:-)
Next day: Finally some sightseeing
