Hans is going to Brooklyn College to 'work' and I take the subway to Manhattan for a trip down memory lane. I visited New York for the first time in 1988 and I want to go to the same area today. But first I have to go to Virgin Records at Times Square to score a special edition of the new single of The Who: I love vinyl:-)
Hans recommended a visit to Grand Central and I admire the impressive building before I travel to Battery Park, where the ferries leave to Staten Island and Liberty Island. I'm not taking that ride today, but I walk around to find the place I stood 18 years ago. And then I turn around towards Manhattan and I notice the blue sky, where the towers used to be. It's the first time I actually miss them. Weird.
I take a lot of pictures. It's hard to believe it's been so long since my first visit (I've been back in 1991 and 1994, but not to this area) I still remember how I felt walking around in New York for the first time. Funny that.

Around 3 p.m. I travel back to Brooklyn and buy two cream-cheese bagels and -of course- donuts on my way back to Hans. (okay, that may not sound very exciting, but if there is one thing Americans got right, it's the (amount of) food/snackshops;o) Hans is already back in his room and together we eat and hang until it's time to go to the airport. The plane is not leaving until 10 p.m., but getting to JFK by subway and airtrain is gonna take about one and a half hour plus you have to check in about three hours in advance. After a final hug at Howard Beach Station I'm waving goodbye to Hans.
To pass the time at the airport there is another extra security checkpoint set up there, so at least I won't get bored waiting.

Almost home - Wednesday August 23
The flight arrives on schedule at 11.00 a.m. on Schiphol-airport (Amsterdam) and mom is there to pick me up. While we are buying a trainticket, we hear a familiar voice: cousin Bert is just picking up Uncle Frits and Aunt Jansje who accompanied Luciene's brother from Brasil. Huh. Small world. We chat for a while and then mom and I get on the train to Zwolle. It's good to be home again (No, I did not hug my computer...)
The End
