Birthday ARTwork: Sleeping Dean Winchester for sillie82

Yay! Today is sillie82's birthday; I made her a papercut present plus additional fanart of her favorite Winchester. Upon her request I'm sharing a making of of the portrait and card. You're all welcome to come celebrate. For decorations I've also included a couple of pretty pictures of sleeping Dean that inspired me. What? I totally had to do research, it was really hard work. Heh, I said hard. Ahem.

That image above was the base for a papercut portrait. Here's a step by step. Result at the end:)


First I fiddled in Photoshop to create an mirrored outline with a combination of various filters (respectively notepaper/photocopy/cut-out) and a hardmix layer. I then adjusted the print with marker and white pencil (the grey areas) to indicate where to cut.
The paper I chose for the portrait is printed blue on one side. I used removable glue (rubbercement) to stick my template to the white back for cutting.


Time to cut! I cut on the backside, then carefully removed the bits from the front to avoid tearing.


On the tiny corners of some of the eye lashes the white back is coming through.
This would not have happened with a sheet of coloured paper, but I decided I kind of like the effect;)


With my light table I check if I missed any bits and I'm testing the purple background.


When all the cutting is done, I peel off the paper with the drawing.

Framed and ready to send off to the birthday girl:) I put it in a wooden box that I decorated with metallic paper (and a Supernatural cut out).


But wait: there is more! I used the cut-out as a template for a painted card. Here's how:

I glued the leftover cut-out backwards on a piece of thick paper (so not mirrored this time!).
I had to make sure the rubbercement was spread out right up to the edges to get the surface as flat as possible.


I used a flat brush with not too wet waterpaint to fill the cut out areas. Then I waited patiently for it to dry thoroughly before removing the papermask!!


Yay, another sleepy Dean emerges! I carefully rubbed off the residual glue with my finger and a soft eraser. (Another reason why the paint has to be dried well;)

Dean is so prrrrrrrrretty and even more so when he's sleeping, so you can watch him when he's unaware. Not like a creeper, shush. ;-p

Glad you like the presents; hope the mailman was careful with the box (I didn't have any bubblewrap, eep). FYI: I've put a black sheet inside the frame, if you ever want to change the background;)

Why do you cut from the back? That seems like a lot of work. I just tape my template OVER the actual paper and then cut through both. works like a charm!
