I have never really listened to the radio, the first time I notice songs is usually when they are shown on tv. And sometimes it takes a while for the lyrics to sink in. So the visual presentation of a song is very important;) That's why I've linked to videos where applicable;) All songs are available as mp3s. (click on title)


Favorite songs, beginning with S, in no particular order:
1. Starlight - Supermen Lovers
Adorable video and catchy song about wanting to be famous.

2. Secretly - Skunk Anansie
Painfully beautiful lyrics, sung by the gorgeous Skin. The video hurts as well

3. Smoorverliefd - Doe Maar
This Dutch band was as big as the Beatles back in the early eighties. Girls screaming, crying and fainting all over the place. I was never hysterical, but I did buy all their records and saw them in concert twice. What? I was a good fangirl;)
Lyrics in Dutch about being madly in love. Tongue firmly in cheek:
"I must be mad / I feel so bad " Brilliant stuff.
This song is from before the video-era, but Doe Maar was the first band that made videos a couple of years later (told you they were big;) OMG, they were so funny. *giggles like mad*

4. Stay - Shakespeare's Sister
Angsty song and video. Love them both.
You must only think of me / There can be no in between
When your pride is on the floor / I'll make you beg for more

5. Sassafras Roots - Green Day
Like so many people I first noticed Green Day when they sang Basket Case. Their CD was given to me as a reward for my internship at the design department of Weekamp. It brings back memories of the early nineties. I love every single song on 'Dookie', so I put both songs with an S on this list:) And since these are not singles, there were no videos; I really had to pay attention to the lyrics;) To me this is the most honest love song ever:

6. She - Green Day
See above. I think everybody can relate to this song. More proof these guys are sweeter than they look.

7. Short Skirt, Long Jacket - Cake
One of my favorite bands! And I didn't even discover them through a video. Blame the bossman for ordering me to buy their album and play it at work non-stop for weeks (we shared an office back then;). I have all their CD's and those are pretty hard to find here, so that should tell you how much I love them. Not neccessarily my favorite song, but all their lyrics are perfect, so they had to be on this list. I use to have this really cool video of Buffy The Vampire Slayer cut to this song, but sadly I can't find it. You will have to visualize this one yourself;)

8. Stories - Therapy
I honestly don't know when I first heard this song, but it's rough and I love it. (I probably never saw this hideous and boring video when it was released *g*).
Happy people have no stories Nuff said. Play it loud.

9. Stumble & Fall - Razorlight
TMI: This song turns me on like whoa. It's so fucking desperate. Plus that beat: guh. First time I saw singer Johnny Borrell perfom I was blown away. (iirc it was Live8) He's not even my type: way too young, skinny and arrogant, but damn. I actually bought both of their CDs. *blushes*

10 Stephen Fry - Zeca Baleiro
A song about the brilliant Mr. Fry, written by Brazilian singer Zeca, when he heard Stephen went missing in 1995. I found this song by accident years later. It's lovely. Just like this conversation between Stephen and Zeca.

Aw, that interview is so sweet. They're so freaking nice to each other. Which play was it, by the way, that got bad reviews and caused him to take off?

Damn. Now I'll have to go look for Nick's performance myself, I'm sure it's in my archive somewhere *g*

It was Cell Mates, written and directed by Simon Gray, starring Stephen together with Rik Mayall.
While still in the try-out stages Stephen read the only(!) bad review about the play - in the Financial Times - and apparently that's what triggered the depression.

In addition to the above link about the play: Mayall said of the incident: "You don't leave the trenches... Selfishness is one thing, being a cunt is another. I mustn't start that war again." It is reported that Mayall and Fry are now friends again. Phew. (Actually I'm pretty sure Rik was being mostly his ironic self when he said that, although at the time he was rather hurt and bitter, because this play was his first real serious performance.) *pets Stephen & Rik*

I will gladly lend you the book by Simon Gray about the whole backstage ordeal. I also have a magazine with a long interview in which Stephen himself explains all.

Ohh yeah, I remember now. I can see where Rik's coming from, of course (like he could ever do anything wrong in my book), but you can't always control your impulses when you're bipolar. Poor Stephen *pets*. Still, very glad they made up. Ah, actors and their tempers ;).

Cool, thanks, I'd love to read that one. After I finish my current to-read list, the plan is to buy the books that are still missing from my Stephen Fry and Nick Hornby collections, hehe.
(Haven't gotten far in Schijnbewegingen yet, by the way (my mom wanted quality time), but I really like it so far. It's also making me want to go to London, hehe.)

Rik & Stephen make such an awesome culture-clash-combo. I know back in the early days of British comedy Rik & Adrian and Stephen & Hugh used to work together, but even then it was visual comedy vs. worldplay. The first is a guilty pleasure, the second is my favorite kind of fun:)

I still need to read Rik's autobiography. I think I will post a to-read-list sometime this week, so I can stick to it...

Isn't it odd to read an original Dutch book that's set in London? I kept translating dialogue to English;)

Didn't you have a trip planned to the UK in October? (Also asking because of possible marathon-dates)

Hmm I should really make a list too, instead of just digging through the stack beside my bed :P.

And yeah, I keep doing that too. It just sounds so... Cockney-turned-Dutch. Very neatly done, I must say ;).

And yeah, Oct 5 to 8 (Friday to Monday). Which reminds me that I need to ask for time off work, bugger.

I talked to Jelle about the odd words she sometimes uses in the books; we suspect Floortje wrote it in English first and then translated some dialogue back to Dutch herself. I had to get used to it, but it does add to the authenticity I suppose.

I was planning to ask for another long weekend at the end of September and thought maybe we could meet then, but if it's too close to the trip to England, we can postpone until late October? (I'm trying to spread my days off for the benefit of fighting stress;)

Oh yeah, that would explain a lot, because it does sound a lot like English-turned-Dutch. On the other hand, I'm so used to reading English that I probably wouldn't recognize an authentic Dutch sentence construction if I saw one :P.
Still loving the book, btw! I love all the decadence, hee. And I really like how the characters are all so nuanced!

Oh, end of September is fine, not to fret ;). Whatever's more practical for you. I'm only going to London for four days so it doesn't require much packing etc, hehe.

I'm thrilled to hear you love the book! I have managed to convince my brother's girlfriend to read the series, since she's going to perform in a play by Oscar Wilde. I think a book about the period and the right area will be inspirational *g*

Cool. I will start the process of asking for time off. It will be so much more relaxing than a regular weekend;)

Oh I totally love it. I mean, I'm only halfway because my life is evil and busy, but I'm going to order the second book tonight so it arrives in a couple of days, when I've finished this one, hee ;). There are so many characters I love that it's not even funny anymore.

Well, since I'll be attending the Infinity convention and there will be a Rocky Horror themed party, I have to bring the black leather and fishnets *veg*. And um, normal clothes for London shopping, hehe ;). I really wish lehorin hadn't told me that HMV in Oxford Street has a Doctor Who section now. I need mo' money!

Lady Windermere's Fan. She did mention who she was gonna play, but somewhere in the later conversation I had to explain why I loved CSI, so I kind of forgot out of spite, because I'm petty like that;-) But since she has shown potential by loving Harry Potter, I might pay more attention next time we meet *g*

I reserved October 1st for a day off, will ask definite permission as soon as the boss comes near me. He was very evasive today - as usual, grumble. I'm not sure how many days off I have left for the rest of the year, but since I've been working overtime a lot, I should be able to get the day off. So: wanna come over that weekend?

Heh. I'm sure you can go shopping in fishnets in London;)

I knooow, I knooow. I want to finish reading this weekend (another busy few days ahead, blegh), and I'm hoping that the second volume will arrive early next week. Hee! It really is so very good -- and I kinda dig how I love all the characters, but don't really trust any of them.

Ahh, I hate it when I have to *explain* why I watch CSI. Especially when friends say things like, 'But isn't it the same every week?'. Um no, people, that would be Lost :P.

That's the weekend of the 29th-30th, right? I can totally do that. Whee!

(And I could do that, yes. But I don't really want to :P.)

Dude, the book ate my brain too, you are not alone. It also stole my heart and I'm so very excited to go through these emotions all over again while you are reading it. Big, big sighs.

Bummer. But Saturday is fine by me, we will have plenty of time -who needs sleep with pretty to watch- and since I have Monday off, you are welcome to stay longer if you can or want;)

I can't check for sure (since I don't have my private bookmarks available at work *g*) but isn't that the weekend after the first new eppie of CSI? Eeeeep! if it is...

Hehe, I'm glad you're amused while I'm in agony at work (the book is in my bag, luring me, argh!) :P.

Hmm, I shall try to get Monday off :). It will take needling, because I also need Friday off for London, but I'm pretty sure that the boss won't mind if I work Tue-Wed-Thu instead of Mon-Wed-Fri *crosses fingers*.
