Things that made me smile today
Sep. 19th, 2007 09:03 pm1. When I was walking to work from the busstop I noticed this guy across the street. I was admiring the back of his -ehm- very well filled out jeans while he stepped off his bicycle. Niiice. But what made me smile was that after he locked his bike, he totally checked himself out in the shopwindow. And then he did that Travolta-thing with his hair -with both hands!- and I giggled all the way to work. "Guys". *rolles eyes* Heh.
2. While I was surfing the net to search for work-related stuff, I found a very interesting site, that had absolutely nothing to do with what I was looking for: Critters!. Nature is so fucking cool. (And you gotta love a job that requires online time *g*)
3. On the bus this morning I was very close to the end of the final part of A Series Of Unfortunate Events but had to get off with only one and a half chapter to go. I had to wait all day until the ride home before I could finish. Wow. *wipes sweat from forehead* That was pretty exciting stuff, kids. Writer Lemony Snicket researched the adventures of Baudelaire siblings Violet (14), Klaus (12) and Sunny (1) . After their parents die in a fire they are sent to live with Count Olaf, who only takes care of them to get his hands on the family fortune. When he is revealed to be a bad guy, the children are brought to another guardian, but Count Olaf keeps following them. It seems like they will never be safe.
From book 1 Lemony Snicket warns the readers it is not an uplifting story and the series' title is an understatement. But I recommend the books wholeheartedly, especially to aspiring writers; The author truely invented a new way of describing events. His style is like nothing I've read in children's stories before. He has a habit of using difficult or unusual words. It's educational, without being overly smart-ass. I liked it, although I must admit I did find it a bit tedious after a while, but that was only when I reached part 11. For the most time it was very inspiring and interesting. But before you go out and get the books, hoping to be entertained, let me warn you with the words of the writer from the back of the first book Bad Beginnings: "I'm sorry to say that this book is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of these books when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.[...]
It's my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing"
If you don't feel like adding 13 books to your to-read-list, you should at least put the film Lemony Snicket on your to-watch-list. It tells the story of the first three books. Perfectly cast children with a never-better Jim Carrey plus as a bonus Meryl Streep and Billy Connolly. Awesome! (and it even has a few surprises for people who have read the books) Go on, after all Sad is happy for deep people *g*

Date: 2007-09-22 12:37 pm (UTC)Aah, lovely! That would definitely be one of those things to keep me in a great mood all day long. And that would make me hum 'Night fever, night fever' until it drove everybody nuts.
2. OMG, furry forms of seafood! Very cool. (And my job requires me to find movie reviews and watch trailers. Oh, the horror! ;)
3. Okay, okay, you got me. They're on the list.
