(I played before with the letter E)

artistic_sillie tagged me with the letter 'Z'!
Not a very common letter in the English language. Plus the first song that came to mind was Zoot Suit from the Soundtrack album of Quadrophenia, which I only had available on vinyl. Another song I thought of also came from my old record collection. Luckily I bought a record player with USB connection last year, so I could turn the songs into mp3 files to share:)
Most of the songs I found are in Dutch, but I managed to find three English songs as well.
Ben Folds - Zak and Sara
Sara spelled without an 'h' was getting bored
On a Peavea amp in 1984
While Zak without a 'c' tried out some new guitars
Playing Sara-with-no-h's favourite song
Ahw. Such a (bitter)sweet song.
De Drie Heren - Zingen Zonder Woorden
Recorded from a performance I attended in 1985, Dutch group The Three Gentlemen: Singing Without Words.
It's hard to sing without words,
It's hard to sing without text
Kind of a protest song, using platitudes. Very clever. Also: the sound they create with just the three of them on a small stage is amazing.
Doe Maar - Zoek Het Zelf Maar Uit (vinyl)
In the early eighties this band was as big as The Beatles and I was a young fangirl dressed in their colours:) This song may be seen as a message to the stalker-fans or as a dismissal of a lover: Find Your Own Way. (roughly translated;)
Je zoekt een schuilplaats voor de regen
(You're looking for a place to hide from the rain)
Een zakdoek voor iedere traan
(A handkerchief for every tear you cry)
En ik kan je de mijne wel geven
(And I could give you mine)
Maar niet de zin van jouw bestaan
(But I can't give your excistence meaning)
Ramses Shaffy - Zing Vecht Huil Bid Lach Werk En Bewonder
A classic song: Sing Fight Cry Pray Laugh Work and Admire.
So beautiful, it makes you want to lift your head up high and embrace life.
The Cranberries - Zombie
The combination of the lyrics and Dolores O'Riordan's voice brings shivers down my spine.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...
The High Numbers - Zoot Suit (vinyl)
The High Numbers (1964) later became known as The Who (1965)! This song features on the Soundtrack of movie Quadrophenia (1979), based on the lesser known rock-opera by The Who from 1973, dedicated to the mods of the 60s. A song called "Cut My Hair" contains the same lyrics about a zoot suit:
I'm the hippiest number in town and I'll tell you why,
I'm the snappiest dresser right down to my inch wide tie,
[...] I wear zoot suit jacket with side vents five inches long,
Toontje Lager - Zoveel Te Doen
One of the bouncier bands of the eighties, song is called "So much left to do" and the lyrics are quite silly.
M'n boodschappen nog doen
(I have to do my groceries)
En straks de vuile was
(and later do laundry too)
M'n haar dat wil ik groen
(I want to dye my hair green)
Maar dat kan morgen pas
(but that'll have to wait until tomorrow)
Don't let the crack fool you though: most of their songs seem happy on the outside, but have a little twang of melancholy inside. My favorites are "Just Like In The Movies" and "Secretely Danced [with you]". Sing those for me and I'm yours;)
