We Will Rock London
Jul. 29th, 2009 05:16 pmHrmpf. I think I missed another one of those traffic-memos; apparently it's "do not indicate when you make a turn"-day. *rolls eyes at cardrivers*
I've been busy cleaning and packing up for my short trip to London with my mom. I will have dinner and a sleep-over at her place tonight, so we can start our journey to Brussels and the Eurostar together tomorrow morning:)
To entertain you while I'm away, here are some musiclinks, with convenient pic-links and additional information for those people who do not share my obsession for these youngsters;)
A couple of weeks ago Panic At The Disco split up. The band is now called Panic! At The Disco again and consists of drummer Spencer Smith and guitarist/singer Brendon Urie (from left to right on photolink;). The original guitarist/lyricist Ryan Ross and bassplayer Jon Walker (ibid.) started another band, called The Young Veins. Yesterday both bands released the first single of their new albums online.
Listen for yourself and let me know if you think the guys made the right decision to go in different directions...
Panic! At The Disco - New Perspective
The Young Veins - Change
When I get back, I'll give you my opinion.
;)

Date: 2009-07-29 04:40 pm (UTC)I'm new around here, not new to Panic(!) music.
My opinion on 'New Perspective: it's easy to sing along with Brendon and very tempting to 'uuuuuuuuu' and 'aaaaaaa' every time that/those part/s comes on. The lyrics are not impossible to remember. I like the 'full' sound provided by the instruments.
'Change': I like the instrumental part. I listen to this kind of music quite often since I've kind of grown up listening to it. I like the (more or less) retro feeling. Ryan's voice is more animated than I've ever heard it before. Since I've only heard him on Youtube so far, I am a bit worried about his ability to sing for one hour as lead vocal. But who knows, maybe he's been practicing.
Conclusion: Obviously, I like both.

Date: 2009-07-29 05:52 pm (UTC)Did they make the right decision? There are several things to consider.
1. There are (obviously) some differences when it comes to the kind of music all four of them wanted to play.
2. Ryan wanted to sing his songs and go on with what they started on P.O..
3. Brendon did not want to sit back and relax anymore. I think he wanted to contribute more.
4. Jon, it's obvious, he agrees with Ryan.
5. Spencer got a bit bored while playing P.O. so he chose to not sit back and relax anymore. So he did something about it.
Conclusion: yes. I don't think they could have put out a double album because all their work would still be separate in the future. So, yeah.
There's one thing that makes me wonder about the Ryan and Spencer 'let's go our separate ways' discussion. I understand Jon was never signed in the first place. But what about Brendon? Did Spencer represent both of them in the discussion or Brendon had no power of decision whatsoever?

Date: 2009-08-04 01:23 pm (UTC)I especially agree with #3; I really think Brendon now has a better chance to grow. We already know he's an awesome singer and can play every fucking instrument he touches, but it will be very interesting to see where he will go with his writing. I love the 'ditties' he contributed to P.O..
As for comparing the songs: I can't really say one is better than the other, since they are so very different. I'm open to all styles of music (with the exception of jazz and schmoopy love balads) and I like the sound of both although they both lose points for weak endings. I agree with your opinion on all counts.
As usual I'm most impressed by Ryan's lyrics and Brendon's voice. I'm more inclined to love music with a strong beat, so that's where New Perspective grabbed me. (The full sound you mention)
Even though Change's words seem simple, they do force you to think more than New Perspective, which is -if I understand correctly- more of a love song (fine, a sex song, whatever, I suck at interpretation) and maybe tries a little too hard on the innuendo. But I don't mind that;)
I can't even describe what Brendon's singing does to me; it usually puts a big grin on my face, no matter how grim the lyrics may be; he's my happy place.
I think they made the right decision to seperate.
Ryan will have a tough job trying to recreate the suprise element of Fever. Will he ever reach that level again? He must have gotten most of his issues out of his system with that album and he now has little personal frustrations left for inspiration. I feel he is trying to compensate by finding a very different style of music (Hence Pretty.Odd.).
Brendon probably will have to work harder on lyrics, but what I've heard so far sounds promising. I'm not sure if we should expect anything extra-ordinairy, but I'm confident the music and especially Panic's performances will not suffer from the split.
While I'm curious to hear Ryan's next (singing)effort I won't be actively fangirling The Young Veins, while I will keep a close eye on the left over Panic-boys (see above 'Happy place';)
And finally: I don't want to dismiss Spencer and Jon's input, but I feel it's Brendon and Ryan who will be judged on where-ever they will go. I share your wonder about the talks between all of them about the break up. I have a feeling Spencer has always been the one to mediate between Ryan and Brendon when it came to musical and other differences, so it probably was up to him what would happen.
I will now wait patiently for the first video/audio leakage of tonight's concert.
