beelikej: (Thoughts bubble)

Been working overtime again. I would go slightly mad if it wasn't for the joy I get from the books I'm reading at the moment. And when I say 'joy' I mean that they offer me other issues than work to get worked up about. That is an awesome distraction;)

Today I finished Female Chauvinist Pigs by Ariel Levy
and started in The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.

Some quotes to think about

From Ariel Levy:
"Rather than only telling teens why they shouldn't have sex, perhaps we also ought to be teaching them why they should. We are doing little to help them differentiate their sexual desires from their desire for attention." [...]
"Many of the issues confronting teenage girls are the same ones affecting grown women: the prioritizing of performance over pleasure; a lack of freedom to examine their own varied, internal desires; an obligaton to look as lewd as possible."

From Richard Dawkins:
(in response to the argument that people 'need religion to comfort them') - "Humanity's need for comfort is of course real, but isn't there something childish in the belief that the universe owes us comfort, as of right?" [...]
"...the consolation-content of a belief does not raise its truth-value." [...]
"But if the comfort that religion seems to offer is founded on the neurologically highly implausible premise that we survive the death of our brains, do you really want to defend it?"
