Amsterdam (Summervacation Day #4;)
Jul. 28th, 2010 04:11 pmYesterday I went to Amsterdam to see Amy Adams a movie and have dinner with brotherdearest. I ended up doing some shopping in between:)
Here are some not very touristy pics of my walk around Amsterdam.
After the movie (Leap Year, don't ask) and shopping, I met my brother and together we took the tram to the south of the city for dinner at Bazar Amsterdam in the Albert Cuypstraat. They were just cleaning up the street from the daily market and there were a lot of seagulls and herons around, looking for scraps. Fascinating birds up close (big!).
Bazar Amsterdam turned out to be a beautiful restaurant and the food was delicious. We ate way too much, but so, so good.
First we had Abdhul's starter; a plate full of delicious samples of Turkish foods: sigara böregi, sigara suçuk, falafel, fried chickenlegs and a piece of lahmacun, served with garlic sauce and pide. For the main course brotherdearest picked a veggie dish (*rolls eyes*) and I had Veal Köfte (beef with pistachio nuts and vigs). Dessert was spectacular; turkish yoghurt with cream and honey for the brother, for me: Bahgrir ba Bastani, Algerian pancake with ice cream and custard plus tons of fresh fruit. I was in heaven.
In between eating (a lot) we talked (a lot) and basically had a great night. Brotherdearest escorted me back to Central Station around 22.15 and I got home a little after midnight. I went straight to bed and unpacked my loot the next morning:) (presents for myself from Dom - Christian Koban (Spuistraat 281, magnificent store, dressed in black;) and Mail&Female (Karma Sutra Honeysuckle bodypowder), some random chocolate, toothbrushes from The White Teeth Store (extra hard;), WinQ magazine and of course orgasms cookies (also known as triple chocolate chip cookies, freshly baked by AH to Go)
A very satisfying trip.

Date: 2010-07-28 09:59 pm (UTC)The paintings in the picture are all by Frans Hals (1580–1666) and that is quite a common style for portraits from the seventeenth century. That time was called the Dutch Golden Age, because we were the most prosperous nation in Europe back then.
One of the best known painters from that period (for Americans;) is probably Johannes Vermeer, who painted the Girl With The Pearl Earring (that inspired the 2003 movie with Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson;). Oh, and there was this guy called Rembrandt (van Rijn) that you may have heard of?
Pardon the history lesson. I'm not really that knowledgable of art, but we kind of have to know these painters to promote our country;)

Date: 2010-07-28 10:53 pm (UTC)It's not uncommon for artists, musea or other cultural organisations to be asked to embellish buildingsites. For example there are some awesome pieces of artwork currently surrounding Amsterdam Central Station. (see this post for a photo;)

Date: 2010-07-29 09:32 am (UTC)Heehee;) Nothing fancy, just some 'hebbedingetjes' that look more impressive in wrapping;) Next time you're in Amsterdam, you should definitely go to Dom; store is all decorated in black and they sell loads of goodies from deadcheap to deadexpensive (omg, the jewelry will make you drool) plus staff consists of bitchy gay boys (also dressed in black)
