Artwork for the SPN_Cinema Challenge 2012
May. 5th, 2012 10:30 pmAfter doing some hands-on arts & crafts for Gishwhes, I realized how much I had missed creating things from scratch; so when it was time for this year's
spn_cinema challenge, I decided to not do one of my usual digital designs. I found an excellent film that inspired me to finally grab those packets of clay I had lying around. As an extra bonus it comes with a plot that could be an old fashioned Supernatural monster of the week episode:) Dundundun....

Title: Sam & Dean and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Artist:
beelikej
Medium: Clay, paint, fabric! (and a bit of Photoshopping;)
Movie Prompt: Wallace & Gromit (in TCofWR)
Genre: Casefile, no romance
Rating: G
Concept: The Winchester brothers are taking a break from hunting and are laying low in small town USA, where the people are getting ready for the annual Giant Vegetable Competition. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, a mysterious, ravaging "beast" begins attacking the town's sacred vegetable gardens! Sam goes into research mode and finds out someone may be infected with the CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT. In the meantime Dean has a sudden craving for carrot-cake...

The making of Sam & Dean

From clay to painted finish!
Below you'll find a step by step look behind the scenes.
If you want to skip that, click here to go straight down to the end;)
Sam's head:

Painting Sam's hair.

Tadaah!
Dean's head:

Painting Dean's face, part one...

...I changed his skin colour three times

Dean's stuffed cheeks are like a mask to cover the original clay head.
The mess I made

Details

Even though Dean's freckles are not always seen on screen, I had to add them :-p

Before and after eating carrot cake!
The bodies
Many ideas were floating around in my head: from building clay statues to photoshopping my mannequins into bodies; I even dressed them up with my old leather jacket (See source post for scary result. Then I saw these dolls in a shop and I immediately knew they were meant to be turned into Sam & Dean.

I decapitated the dolls and got rid of the fur. For Dean I used a marker to make the shoes black and I covered the pants with blue tape to create jeans. In case you're wondering: those sharp things sticking out from the neck are the teeth of a potatoe-fork (like a corn-fork) that I used to connect the heads to the body.

In between the old dolls' clothes up in my attic I found a tiny T-shirt for Dean and a white short-sleeved shirt for Sam. I painted the first a navy green and decorated the latter with a blue plaid pattern.

And here they are, all dressed up and ready to play.
(If you're a fan of Supernatural you probably notice the missing samulet.
I created that last minute from part of the skull-chain from my old wallet)

And as they say: that's all, folks!
I hope you enjoyed this half as much as I did. FYI: I love comments ;-)
Even more background information can be found in my Spring 2012 Sourcepost. If you want to know more about the film, I highly recommend the official Wallace & Gromit website, it's awesome:)
This was my first time fiddling with Sam & Dean, all my previous designs feature RPS-pairings Jensen/Jared or Jensen/Jeff: Masterlist of all my SPN artwork

Date: 2012-05-06 07:41 am (UTC)It wasn't until I put the sideburns on Sam's face that I started to believe I could actually make this work. They have magic powers!
P.S. When you come over, you can
play withtouchhold the Sam & Dean dolls in real life. What? I haven't been doing that. No. *giggles*(no subject)

Date: 2012-05-06 08:21 am (UTC)I am very pleased with the amulet, because that bit of chain means a lot to me. I always like to give my artwork a personal touch and that was just "it":)
The end-gif is one of my favorites too!
It makes me very happy that it made you smile:)
