Last week I posted pictures of windmills and accidently set some people up for disappointment, because they had expected something more traditional from the Netherlands. I honestly was not aware of that misunderstanding, since over here it's common to call old fashioned wooden windmills simply "mills".
I've done some research and discovered those modern energy collecting windmills are actually called wind turbines.
I also learned there are 'only' about 1200 traditional windmills left in The Netherlands, over 90% are considered monuments. On my way to work I travel past two of those. Below are some photos I took from the bus yesterday and today:)

These are "Korenmolens" = litterally Corn mills, also known as gristmills or flour mills; they grind grain into flour. From a design point of view they are called "Stellingmolens", which means the framework and sails are higher up than regular mills so they can catch wind even when they are surrounded by other buildings. (The first mill originally stood in a less rural area)

Me, 1974 (about four and a half years old:)

Okay, so I couldn't find a photo of me wearing wooden shoes, I'm not even sure the pair on the wall was ever worn by me; it could have been decoration from the start;) I did wear those types of clogs when I was a kid, mostly during camping trips instead of rubber boots, but never as my usual day-to-day footwear. I quite liked them though:)

Hope y'all enjoyed this touristy trip :-p
*One final lesson: my country is often called Holland, but this is merely the biggest province (plus it's easier to yell at international sportsmatches;). The Kingdom of the Netherlands also includes some overseas bits of land from colonial times; the part that's on the top left hand corner of mainland Europe is called The Netherlands. (we say 'Nederland', meaning low land)

Thus endeth the lesson and the tour.

Lovely.

Hey, did I ever tell you that one of Peter's favorite aunties lives in Friesland (or Fryslân, if you wish to be technical)? And that he actually can speak...tho badly...West Frisian?? All true.

And I even have a pair of wooden shoes. I have a picture of Chloe wearing them. In her dress with windmills (the traditional ones!!!) on the hem!

:-) You didn't! That is very cool. I actually grew up in Friesland (Sneek/Snits) and have been told I spoke the language until we moved away to the Noordoostpolder when I was eight.

Ahw, that sounds like a lovely photo, you make me curious about that dress:)

Windmills! Whenever I'm on the train up north, that's how I know I've crossed the border *g*.
I am STILL not sure about wooden shoes though. Aren't they just super painful and heavy? Or does your country have a secret wooden clog ingredient :D?

:-p Those mills are such a part of the landscape that I hadn't even realized I pass not one but two of them on my way to work. Where I've been going every day for over 17 years now. Ahem.

I guess wooden shoes take some getting used too, just like my heavy army boots. But they're not painful and I can walk better on those than the type of clogs without a back;)
