Go West - Sun in wintertime

After all the weekends staying at home fiddling with artwork for the ReverseBang in the past few weeks (months?) I finally got out of the house again last Saturday;) I went to Amsterdam to do some special shopping, but mostly to visit brotherdearest and to see how he decorated his apartment after I helped with the move in December, before I went to Australia. (Speaking of that trip; a long picspam of week 2 will follow soon!).
Because I know some of you like to explore Amsterdam with me, I'm sharing some photos of a newly discovered neighbourhood.
Brotherdearest and his girlfriend moved to Oud West (the Old West part of town) and he showed me around that area, but I first made some photos on the tram from the citycentre.

This was taken from the train; it's my first view of Amsterdam coming in from the East. (Click on photos to zoom in:) The green building is Science Center for kids Nemo (Oosterdok).

Walking along Damrak; always look up! (Mind the crowd, do not to bump into people;).

Looking back at the trainstation and to the right Beurs van Berlage (recommended for art exhibitions). Damrak is a bit of a building site at the moment, because the city council is creating a special 'red carpet' route from the station all the way through town so in the future visitors can follow the red brick road around town;)

The flag with the weapon of Amsterdam (3 Xs;) on top of the Berlage clocktower.

View from the tram, Rokin (near Muntplein)
I got off to shop at Mail & Female and then got on another tram to Oud West.

View from the tram, Marnixstraat (near Nieuwe Passeerdersstraat). Are those lions smiling?

...and the rest of that black building, I love all the faƧades in Amsterdam.
No pictures from my brother's apartment, but it looks awesome! After lunch we walked around the neighbourhood. I took pictures of random sights, among them a pretty cool building for lovers of architecture;)
First up: five windows from the HEMA artproject, where several artists created a drawing to promote a product of this wellknown Dutch warehouse. (There is one in every town)

Thermal underwear

Freshly baked applepie

Hey, a map of the area! Can you see where we are?

"You *bet* I love sausages" (it's a play on a Dutch saying;)

Hot dog :-p

Entrance of Het Sieraad, former school, now community building in the style of de Amsterdamse School (famous design movement from the early 1900s)

Are these not the coolest statues?
After drooling over architecture and art, we went home for a short break (in which brotherdearest tried to explain cellphones to me. Don't ask. I still have a lot to learn...) In the late afternoon we walked to the town centre for more shopping (I bought Tony Chocolonely bars at the organic supermarket). In the evening we met up for dinner with our cousin who happened to be visiting Amsterdam for a romantic weekend with his wife.
I made some more photos along the way...

Because we'd already seen enough shops, we picked a route throught the Vondelpark. How funky is this sign? They sure tried to include ALL the things :-D

*stares*

I wish I remembered where I took this photo and the one above. I'll have to ask brotherdearest later.

Look: a plane! Not that usual to fly over the city, the weather was just freaky enough (so.much.wind.) for the airport to change the landing and take off directions. This is Hotel American by the way. (I like planes, okay)

We had dinner at Do Brasil Why is everyone looking at me as if I don't know how to use a camera. It's so encouraging;)

My cousin's wife, who is from Brasil, recommended the Picanha and wow, was she right; it was a meatlover's paradise. Omnomnom.
Afterwards they had to run for the train, while we had some time left for dessert at Ben & Jerry's \o/ Then my brother walked me to the station and we passed the wonderfully lit Magna Plaza on the way:

Isn't that a gorgeous final view of the city?
I got a slow train home, which meant I didn't have to change trains AND I had extra time to read. *happy sigh*
What a great day.
