beelikej: (JDM-hands)

Soooooo. When I asked if people would be interested in seeing work in progress posts of my personal paper art-project, I kind of forgot how much time it takes to choose photos and explain the images. But sharing the process will force me to set deadlines, which I desperately need to keep going. It's a little daunting to put these sneak peeks out there, because I usually work on my own until I at least sort of know where I'm going, but we'll see how it works out. I'm planning to do updates once a week.

To prevent myself from postponing or using these wip-posts to spent time on other stuff than actual arting, I'm trying to keep the captions to a minimum. Do not hesitate to ask for clarification if you want to know more. All comments are appreciated, feel free to criticise or offer advice;)

WIP, part 1: setting up and testing
The codename for this is the JDM-wings project, which says it all, really. Although if he turns out to be an angel, he may end up being John Winchester after all. *grins*

I have several ideas on how to incorporate Jeff's body and face, but that's for later. I'm first doing wing- and papertests. As usual I start with fiddling with photos.

Picking different body sizes and shapes for a base sketch.

I took photos of some birds who were willing to pose for me; spread them wide, baby! Also testing all the JDMs in Photoshop. (Who's your favorite?)

Prints for reference (my lighttable in front)

A quick trace / line sketch with pencil on plain paper (80grms white)

Eventually I will make the wings from sparkly paper (160 grams) - it's so fancy.

But first I do a rough cut on cheap paper to experiment with effects.

I will use this model to figure out the size and pattern of the wings and how to bend or fold them.

I am going to try these wings on all the different JDM's I have printed out....

To be continued....[wings WIP part 2 is up!]

I'm also going to be working on film-inspired art for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema genre challenge; from the prompted 80s films I chose Innerspace... (have ordered the DVD to rewatch that classic:). This will be posted in the last week of October.

If you want to see some finished artwork, check my Masterlist of artsy creations. For specific paperart, click the papercuttingart TAG below; my previous project was a portrait set for The Winter Soldier, the rest is all SPN-fanart:)

Always amazing to see our paper cut arting! I love seeing how you build it up!

And I want that light table!! But then, I have realized that putting a lamp underneath my dining table, turns that to a light table, so I am okay.

spn_cinema - YAY! I finally signed up and claimed as you know. I didn't know it would be so much fun! I am triggered by the limitations fic gives me, so I do like the normal bigbang the best - but this year I have really enjoyed reversebang, and now also this challenge. I am finished with the first piece of art for flashdance, and are now working on other pieces that are just "additional stuff because I want more challenge." So when I realized I am more than able to make things difficult for myself, I truly enjoy these challenges as well. :-)

I could have sworn I replied to this, do'h! Before I had the fancy lighttable I mainly used my windows during the day or my glass cabinet by night. Those totally work too, but I must say I got a lot more inspiration working on the real thing (which was found in the basement at work and was going to be thrown out, so I got it as a ridiculous bargain).

So very curious about how you will be inspired by Flashdance. I love the short turnaround of this new genre challenge (such a good push to DO something). For me a film really functions as a BB-fic, but it also gives me room for my own interpretation on top of that.
I watched my pick (Innerspace) yesterday and my brain is buzzing with artsy ideas:)

Ooooooh wow!!!! I love how you do all the tests and I will always love getting a look at your paper cutting - and getting glimpses of your fingers/hands as you're working.

Very cool!!!

*beams* Thank you! Heh, I mostly leave my hands in the photos to show the size of the paperpieces, how nice of you to say you like looking at them as well:)
