Last weekend I made arretjescake, a traditional Dutch treat made with chocolate and biscuits (cookies in US-English;) It doesn't require an oven; you only need a fridge! This was the very first time I made one all by myself. \o/ When I was little, my mom would let us break all the biscuits, I still like that part the best. *g* I don't even own a regular cake tin, but managed to make it look like a cake after all.
If I can do it, everyone can, so I'm sharing the recipe and pictures of my first effort...

ARRETJESCAKE
(The name comes from a cartoon-character that was designed to promote the solidified coconut butter originally used in the recipe) I tried to find the right translations of the ingredients, don't hesitate to ask for clarification. This is my mom's recipe (who got it from my gran:)

Ingredients:
250 gram vet (plantaardig frituurvet, blokvorm: Diamant) = 250 grams solid frying oil (Vegetable/cooking fat)
200 gram witte basterdsuiker = 200 grams white caster sugar
4 volle eetlepels cacao (50 gram) = 4 big tablespoons cocoa powder (about 50 grams)
2 eieren = 2 eggs
200 gram biscuits (1 pak) = 200 grams of biscuits (cookies;)

1. break the biscuits in small pieces, set aside
2. mix the eggs with the caster sugar, then stir in the cocoa powder
3. melt the fat slowly on a low fire

4. carefully pour the fat in with the cocoa mix, stir slowly until it's a smooth mixture
5. add the broken biscuits

6. spoon the mixture in a cake tin, spread until the toplayer is somewhat even;)
7. put in fridge for a couple of hours

I made it in the evening and didn't take it out of the fridge until the next day. The cake will come out of the tin easily if you hold in a bit of hot water.

Tadaah 1; the extra mixture I had put in a tupperware box.

Tadaah; an actual, yet tiny cake!

I'm not sure how to present it: upside down...

...or like this:)

Very sweet and very rich, omnomnom.

Let me know if you try to make it!

J.

There's something similar in Germany: a caked called "Kalter Hund" (cold dog), which is made the same way, except that the biscuits aren't broken in pieces but orderly stacked up. ;)

It was really popular in the 80's.

Neat! But breaking the biscuits is such fun to do;)

(What are the white bits on top? Chocolate / almonds?)

I actually have no idea, that pic is from Wikipedia. ;)

Usually you put sprinkles on top, but you can use anything you like.

*rolls around in all the comments*
I could only sneak a peek at my mail from work today, I was so horribly busy, and then I saw this message (and two others that I didn't check) and you put such a big smile on my face. Now I'm home and find my whole inbox full with awesome \o/

Oh, I do hope you try this, I'm curious if I translated all the ingredients correctly;)
