US Roadtrip - part 3: Missouri, Route 66
Aug. 25th, 2015 11:24 pmThis third picspam covers just one day of our roadtrip, but one packed with all the elements of a full US-experience! There was funky breakfast cereal and popcorn at the movies,
tmn1966, her car and I cruised along the highway and discovered the first of many funky sights and outposts on Route 66. We also crossed the Mississippi river, visited a sculpture park for a dose of art and did I mention we went to the movies? WE TOTALLY WENT TO A DRIVE IN CINEMA, SO FRICKIN' COOL \o/

We started the day with breakfast in our motel in Illinois, WHERE YOU COULD MAKE YOUR OWN WAFFLES!!! Okay, so it was my first time and I didn't put enough batter in for a full circle, but my three quarters were warm and delicious, ha!

Yes, another photo featuring
tmn1966's baby in front of our motel. See how we learned to park it the right way 'round? While T packed the car I brushed my teeth and noticed how awesome my new T-shirt was. The airline losing my bag did have certain perks;)

Back on the road: we could see St. Louis in the distance! The Arch!
Hope you can read the sign on the right: it says we're about the cross the Mississippi River \o/

Such a cool bridge, taking us from Illinois into Missouri. Hello, state number four!

We made a brief visit to Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, mainly for the eyeball. I have taken a lot of photos of the eyeball. Because I love eyeballs. (Eye, 2007 by Tony Tasset, fiberglass, resin, oil paint, steel - 452 inches circumference.) You can click to zoom in on the other sculptures and the eyeball. Does anyone want to see more photos of the eyeball? Anyone? Hello?

YAY, our first Route 66 sign \o/ This is Cuba, MO, self proclaimed "Mural City", you can see an example of one of many murals made by local artists in the background and another one even further back:)
When we drove around trying to find more murals, we noticed a sign directing us to "the world's largest rocking chair", in nearby Fanning, MO. Of course having been to Casey, IL the day before, where they have ALL the biggest things and where they are currently building a big rocker, we were curious. Oh-oh, I don't think Casey stands a chance: LOOK AT THIS THING! It dwarfs the car (and me: link to close up/selfie on Instagram). Accidently we also found the Route 66 Outpost right next to it \o/

After buying some souvenirs, we got back on the road, driving along the Trail of Tears through the Ozarks. This original alignment of U.S. Route 66, now known as Teardrop Road, is the site of the historic Devil's Elbow Bridge (see below).

The Devil's Elbow Bridge, spooky woooooooooh. We drove slowly across for a peek at the river below, but it wasn't as exciting as it sounds. Maybe we should have gotten out of the car for the biker bar with the same name ;-p
Instead we drove on to our next stop, where we first had a quick lunch in the car, bless our big blue cooler in the backseat. I had (greek) yoghurt with funky cereal: at Walmart I had bought the most colourful fun box I could find: Dragonballs crunch, is it not awesome? It tasted like a rainbow too;)

This lovely Route 66 museum is located inside Lebanon-Laclede County Library, it features recreations of a 1950s gas station and a classic diner, along with displays of antique cars, a collection of Route 66 books, magazines and videos. Free Admission!

Our motel for tonight was just across the state border of Oklahoma, we had a tiny rest before heading back to Carthage in Missouri for MOVIENIGHT....

The Route 66 DRIVE IN, oh yeah. I AM SO EXCITED!! *bounces*

We found a perfect spot for the car and I hopped out to explore the grounds; that screen is so HUGE.

Look at all the cars; some people brought chairs, but we settled down for the film properly: in the front seats of the car, including nachos, sodas and of course POPCORN.

While the sky slowly turned dark, they started playing old USA promotional films. IT WAS SO FRICKIN' COOL. I felt like I was in movieland:) We watched Antman and because we didn't care for Pixels with Adam Sandler, we left after the intermission commercials. (ALSO COOL:) We drove back to the motel with the darling Paul "Antman" Rudd on our mind.
Sweet dreams until the next part: Ooooooklahoma! (and Texas:)
part 1: Amsterdam to Ohio | part 2: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois

Date: 2015-09-02 08:19 am (UTC)The drive-in was definitely a big highlight. That was such a fantastic part of the trip. And the movie was good, which was a great plus. lol And what made it even better was getting to experience it with you. Just wish it wouldn't have been so hot.
And haha, Ooooooklahoma, us trying to sing that... one of the best memories. :D
