Amsterdam LightFestival 2018/2019
Jan. 6th, 2019 05:42 pmIn December I went to Amsterdam, not only to pick up my awesome birthday cake, but also to visit the LightFestival 2018/2019 with brotherdearest. For this edition of the grand outdoor exhibition of light art installations, the route was set up all around the Herengracht (the third canal ring) and you can see it by foot, by bicycle or by boat. We opted for bikes this time and it turned out to be the perfect way to get a great view of everything. Here are my photos of almost all the art.
Parabolic Lightcloud - amigo & amigo
One of our favorites, we parked our bikes and stood here for quite a while, just staring in awe. For a better view of the colours, scroll down to the photos below!
But before it's dark enough to go to the LightFestival, let me first show you a couple of photos of my afternoon in Amsterdam:)

I arrived by train and underground at the Sloterdijk station in Amsterdam, where I had to change to a tram to the neighbourhood where I would pick up my birthdaycake.
Look at the glorious rainbow crossing I walked down to the tramstop.

Very cool:)

Walking through the Bos & Lommer neighbourhood, I came across this Daycare Center with colourful wallart by El Bastardo (Raul Balai). Funky!

After putting the cake safely in my brother's fridge, we went to get me an OV-bike and a map of the Festival route.
First light art we saw in front of Amsterdam Central Station: All the Light You See - Alicia Eggert
Then we cycled to the square in front of the Beurs van Berlage, for Virtual Fairground - Femke Schaap.
It's only the light that's moving (hee, look at that toddler trying to move the wheel:)
From here on out the Festival route follows the canal, starting back at the station; we're cycling clockwise through town.
I've added the artists and titles, and if necessary a translation and/or explanation.

Night Vision - Tom Biddulph & Barbara Ryan

Mr. J.J. van der Veldebrug - Peter Vink [Mr. J.J. van der Veldebridge]
+ Natuurlijk Licht - Meke Vrienten [Natural Light]

Natuurlijk Licht - Meke Vrienten [Natural Light]
We crossed another bridge to the other side of the canal; you may see this piece better in the first photo up above: it's a collection of every day objects that have lights in them (ovens, fridges, etc.)
Continuum - Sebastian Kite + Aftereal - Yasuhiro Chida
Aftereal was hard to capture in a photo: it was an installation of hundreds of horizontal wires moving like a wave in the light.

Parabolic Lightcloud - amigo & amigo
The video at the top of this post doesn't really capture the fabulous colours in this installation.
The shape is based on the Fibonacci spiral.

Parabolic Lightcloud - amigo & amigo
We couldn't get enough of this one, we had to drag ourselves away to get back on our bikes:)

Picto Sender Machine - Felipe Prado
This pixelpanel detected movement, so brotherdearest did a groovy dance. *g*

Neighbours - TOCHKA
Animations with light, made in collaboration with children from 30 Amsterdam schools; there are different sets showing every night.

Absorbed by Light - Gali May Lucas

Spider on the Bridge - Groupe LAPS + Two Lamps - Jeroen Henneman (only one in the photo;)
Jeroen Henneman's lamp is a classic; there has been one on top of City Hall in Zwolle since 2000! I see it every day on the way to work:)

Starry Night - Ivana Jelić & Pavle Petrović + Midnight Summer Dream - Teatro Metaphora
Midnight Summer Dream is made out of discarded washing machine drums!

Waiting... - Frank Foole

A.N.N. - Koros Design
Very cool visualisation of brain activity; A.N.N. stands for Artificial Neural Network.

Strangers in the Light - Victor Engbers & Ina Smits + Light a Wish - OGE Group

Light a Wish - OGE Group
Another one of our favorites: loads of fluffy dandelion seeds floating above the canal <3

ARCHEStextures: PORTAM CIVITATIS - Peter Snijder

Action>Reaction 2.0 - Sjimmie Veenhuis
An interactive panel where you could push lights on and off to create a chainreaction of colours.
O.T. 976 - Stefan Reiss
Again the video failed to capture all the different colours of the moving lights; see photos below!

O.T. 976 - Stefan Reiss
I don't know how the people living here felt about it, but I really loved the light-effect on the houses:)

Transmission - Serge Schoemaker
Hard to photograph this wave of light, I suspect this is the one piece that is better viewed from the water.

Desire - UxU Studio
At first sight this installation looked like a big red blob in a box, but as we parked our bikes and explored it from different angles, the shape became clear.

Desire - UxU Studio + Antenna Sud - Michela Bonzi
A kiss from Amsterdam! :-*
If you fancy a visit to Amsterdam yourself: the Festival is open until January 20, the lights are on from 17:00-22:00. (Or start planning a trip for the 2019/2020 edition!:)
