London - part I
Nov. 4th, 2005 04:28 pmTravel-information: 8.12 a.m. train to Rotterdam, change to the 10.16 to Brussels, a twenty minute delay so lots of stress getting through customs, but I was just in time for the 12.58 Eurostar. Arrived in London Waterloo Station at 3.25 p.m.
Hostel St. Christopher's Orient Espresso, near Undergroundstation London Bridge.
Left my lugage and went to LeicesterSquare to decide on a theatre for the night. Scored a cheap (restricted view) ticket for Otherwise Engaged by Simon Gray with Richard E. Grant in the lead. I like him, but was even more interested in the performance of Anthony Head, our favorite Watcher.
Spent the afternoon stocking up on Pink Lemonade (can't buy it in the Netherlands), moviemagazines and books (Borders is a very tempting store on Oxford Street and it's open until 11 p.m.: Heaven!), Boots' Baby Powder (love that stuff) and DVD Shaun Of The Dead (bargain!). Did contain myself at Hamley's and enjoyed my visit to the world's oldest toystore even without buying anything! (good girl;) Had diner at KFC (typical english, right -heh;).
In the theatre I discovered the meaning of restricted view: a few rows in front of me was a tiny pilar. It didn't bother me that much, though, 'cause the actors were all over the stage so I could see everything just fine:-) The play was about a guy who tries to spend a quiet afternoon at home, but is constantly being interupted by family, friends and neighbours. Anthony played the best friend who drank too much and was actually very entertaining for a drunk. It was supposedly a comedy, but I did find it a bit confronting and serious here and there. Good though and great to see Mr. Head on stage:-)
Back in the hostel I had a long chat with Shae, who came to London for clubbing, but spent most of her time hanging out with friends and booze (notice how I'm not judging her? *g*) I promised to wake her up in the morning for breakfast.
